International Standards for Dock Fenders
Multi-Dimensional Standards
Dock fenders, such as DD fenders and Arch fenders, do not have a single ISO standard. Instead, their design and performance are guided by a combination of international guidelines, national standards, and third-party certifications.
Guiding Standards
The most widely recognized reference is the PIANC Guidelines (2002), together with BS 6349 (UK Code of Practice). In addition, products are often manufactured in compliance with Chinese Standard HG/T 2866-2011 or Japanese Standard JIS K 6384.
Quality Verification
Performance is verified through compression, reaction force, and energy absorption tests based on ASTM / ISO methods, and quality is assured by certifications from major Classification Societies (BV, LR, ABS, DNV, CCS, etc.) as well as ISO quality systems.
The table below summarizes the key standards and certifications for DD and Arch fenders:
| Fender Type | Main Applicable Standards | Performance Test Standards | Certification / Approval |
| DD Fender (Double D / Drum Fender) | – PIANC Guidelines (2002, Fender Design) – BS 6349 Part 4 (UK Code of Practice) – Chinese Standard HG/T 2866-2011 – Japanese Standard JIS K 6384 | – Compression & energy absorption tests according to ASTM / ISO methods – Factory acceptance test (FAT) witnessed by third party | – Certificates from major Classification Societies (BV, LR, ABS, DNV, CCS, etc.) – ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 for quality & environmental management |
| Arch Fender (V/DA/SA Type) | – PIANC Guidelines (2002) – BS 6349 Part 4 – HG/T 2866-2011 (China) – JIS K 6384 (Japan) | – Deflection, reaction force, and energy absorption tests – ASTM / ISO-based test methods | – Classification Society approvals (BV, LR, DNV, ABS, etc.) – Quality system certification (ISO series) |
